Story... exhibition, guest artist Mardi Wood at High Desert Gallery.
Event Description: High Desert Gallery is excited to announce guest artist, Mardi Wood, February 17 to April 11, 2012. “A Story..”, exhibition is featured at High Desert Gallery, 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at The Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend, Oregon.
Mardi Wood's ceramic work is the result of a process developed over many years of making. Evidence of the artist's hands can be felt in her paper-thin cups and bowls. The balance and subtle weight of each piece have been created by fine adjustments made at every step of construction. Inspired by her roots in the Northwest and her family home on the Columbia River, Woods' vessels are painted with layers of glaze and oxides built up during repeated firings.
Woods now lives in Northern California, and has a second residence in Italy. Images of Maremmana cattle, drawn from the Italian landscape, often appear in her recent work.

High Desert Chamber Music presented by Bank of America
continues their fourth season featuring the ARMADILLO STRING QUARTET on Tuesday,
March 6, 2012, 7:30pm at the Oxford Hotel. The group has been one of Los Angeles’
premier chamber groups, since its founding in 1980. Advocates for music old and new, they
have given numerous world premiere performances, including many works written for them.
Since 1991 they have presented annual concerts of the chamber music of Peter Schickele
(aka P.D.Q. Bach), featuring the composer in performance with the group and as commentator
on his works, which have included many works written for the quartet. The group made their
debut at Carnegie Hall in December 1999 performing the world premier of the P.D.Q. Bach
String Quartet “The Moose”, which they subsequently recorded for the Telarc label.
The members of the Armadillo String Quartet include violinists Barry Socher (Los Angeles Phil-
harmonic) and Steve Scharf (Associate Principal Second Violin Los Angeles Opera Orchestra),
violist Ray Tischer (Principal Viola Britt Festival Orchestra), and Armen Ksajikian (Associate
Principal Cello Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and Hollywood Bowl Orchestra).
The program includes works by Schickele, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky. Seating at the Oxford Hotel
is limited, advance ticket purchase recommended.
The “Spotlight Chamber Players”, from HDCM’s Educational Outreach program, will perform
selections by Corelli and Mozart in the Oxford Hotel’s lower lobby prior to the performance. This
program was developed to provide a high level of chamber music instruction to aspiring young
musicians. Students in grades 6-12 with at least three years of private study and an intermediate to
advanced level are eligible to audition. Regular chamber music instruction is provided through
HDCM, in addition to performance opportunities at HDCM events and complimentary admission
to the HDCM Series. The following students were selected for this year’s program – Mateo Garza
(violin), Hannah Ortman (violin), Ben Kroeker (viola), and Jonah Rosberg (cello).
General Admission - $35 / Student Tickets - $10
